Everyone wanted to achieve a certain expression of agreement between representation, or the picture painted by man, and the reality that posed for the picture. That agreement was not supposed to lead to naturalistic representation, to the replacement of one by the other. From our point of view, we can say that the goal for those painters was liberating the imagination from effort. That invention could be realized only through advancing such visual suggestions as would allow a given scene to be regarded as a real-life event. Most viewers acknowledged that original goal as the 'task' of painting and came to expect given experiences. This is probably why we the well-disposed imagination of the beholder could out do the achievements of painting and see more realism than had actually been achieved.
